Ah Wednesday, here you are again my good friend! It feels like ages since I sat to just write, you know that? So today we’re not only taking a break from the ads and sponsored posts that seemed to take over for the last few weeks. We’re also talking about why I’m taking a break from social media and blogging for a few days.
So, as I was saying, we’ve had quite a few sponsored posts and ads recently. They’ve been flying out of here, regardless of the “one posting day a week” target I set myself back in January of this year. Then again, we had no idea what the year was about to throw at us, did we? As the year progressed, and I realised how much I enjoyed actually having time for social media and blogging again, I turned my head back to taking it seriously.
I published my Ultimate Guide to a Successful Blogmas [AD]. I became an affiliate for other bloggers and their hard work. In fact, I now need to work out a schedule for remembering to promote them all! Then, after a semi-throw away comment from Cameron back in August, I turned my head back to all my half written stories and books that had been started and abandoned. Cameron asked why I didn’t just combine them into one book as a collection of short stories. I think I brushed it off as something I wouldn’t be interested in doing, but then I got to thinking why not? I mean, I had read and reviewed Ray’s Ultimate Guide to a Powerful Book Launch, so why not take what I’d learnt and put it to good use?
All of a sudden, I was on the computer all day in work. I was working on my blog when I came home. Or I was working on my collection of short stories. And then my Open University course started up again, and I couldn’t ever seem to be too far away from a laptop or computer. Trust me, my eyes are beginning to hurt even just thinking about the amount of screen time! Which brings me to another thing…
Even if I’m not writing up blog content, I’m promoting it. I’m scheduling tweets, looking on Pinterest, scheduling Instagram, scrolling through Facebook, or just texting people and catching up on emails. I mean, it reached a point I got a notification my screen time on my phone was down 20% one week to just 6 hours 14 minutes on average a day…
So. I am taking a break!
As you know, I’m currently only in work 3 days a week. And when I leave the office today, I have a full week booked off next week. Semi because I had booked a week off for Rachel’s graduation (which has obviously been postponed indefinitely) but also because we need to use our leave for the year so why not take a week of full pay and actually get stuff done? I mean, the plan had been to use the week to try different restaurants, go on road trips, see things in the cinema, or even take half an hour bowling. Right now, very little can actually be done. But. I’m taking a break starting midnight tonight, until Sunday. Then I can come back on next Monday, and feel refreshed and ready to go.
Another reason I’m taking a break? Blogmas is coming. And while I love it, it drains me. So I’m going to take the next 4 days to completely block out all thoughts of blogging and social media, so that when I come back I can turn my head to what really is the most wonderful time of the year for blogging! All I’ll say is – I have no idea how people manage Blogtober and Blogmas in the one year, on top of working and keeping themselves functioning. Heck, I’m sleeping an average of 5 hours a night at the minute and still don’t have time to keep up!
Thank you for sticking with me through this post. I know it’s been a little whiny, and I fully appreciate it’s not the fun and bubbly Katie that’s been on in the last while. Look after yourselves, and I’ll be back next Wednesday with a new post that has been pushed back multiple times to allow for other content to go live!
Be good, be safe, and take a break if you need to!
