Christmas Card Swap!

So I know that a lot of you will feel it’s too early for this kind of a post, but I have finally started Christmas present shopping and I’m getting really excited for the festive season!

In our flat, because of my ‘obsession’, there’s a rule that Christmas isn’t properly mentioned until at least 1st November. Apparently my excitement for the most wonderful time of the year makes people associate Christmas as a bad thing as they can’t talk about it without worrying they’re going to set me off. However, this year I have you lovely people to talk to about it so I think I’m doing better than last year! Alongside the other GRLPOWR girls, I’ve been getting more and more excited for this festive season, talking what we’ll be doing on our Twitter, blog, instagram and just our own accounts in general. Some of us are going to attempt Blogmas, and just the general mood is Halloween isn’t coming fast enough for us to hit that festive spirit!

I would love to share with you all the surprise part of our flat Christmas dinner this year, but as I am aware that Mary and Nuala now read here occassionally, I don’t want to ruin the surprise for them so if you’d like to know, tweet me! I started getting organised for it on Tuesday when I met Jordanne (thelifeofaglasgowgirl) in town for lunch. I had a great time and it was so much fun to be able to meet up with someone that I’ve been talking to for almost 2 months! Wow has it really been that long? It feels like years ago and yet it also feels like only yesterday… Does that make any sense?

I had the brainwave for it as I got the subway into town and so I’ve managed to spend at least 10 minutes a day thinking about what I’ve to buy and organise. With last year’s Santa’s Sweet Sleigh being so well received, I’ve really struggled to think of what I can do to make this year’s surprise even better. I’m also trying really hard to watch what I say here because I plan on writing a few blogmas posts on this!

As it’s now the 20th of October, and time is marching on, I wanted to bring up the topic of my Christmas Card Swap. By the way, I’m going to suggest we change the spelling of Christmas as every time I type it on a computer I type ‘CHristmas’ – it’s getting annoying! But yes, the Card Swap. Currently, I have 13 names and addresses of people who would like to be involved in this, and there’s still plenty of time for those of you who want to to get involved!

My plan to spread some Christmas cheer this year developed into the idea of a Christmas Card Swap. The general idea of it would be for anyone who wants to be involved to send me (either DM me on Twitter or email me at lifewithktkinnes@outlook.com) with an address – this can even be a PO Box address as I know how people feel about sharing their address online – and in 3 weeks (probably the 15th of November) I will DM or email back with a list of the addresses that have been sent to me. This way, it’s up to you how many Christmas cards you send and there’s no pressure to send to everyone if you don’t want to! Of course, if you would prefer me to keep your address off the list then I’m happy to do that too! Cards can be homemade or store bought, and that part is entirely up to you. Just remember to check latest posting times and dates with your local post office as you want it to arrive before the 25th December!

So yes, if this is something you’d like to be involved in, I can be contacted on Twitter or through email with the subject line Christmas Card Swap.

Hope you’re all getting in the festive spirit and listening to those classic songs that come on every year!

Why bother?

Firstly, this is the first post I’ve written since buying my domain so hello everyone to the lifewithktkinnes.com site! Oh that felt so good to type without having to put the .wordpress.com …

After purchasing my domain, I decided to have a look through my spam comments – there’s nearly always one advertising ‘free animal sex pics’ that I giggle at before deleting permanently – just to clarify, I giggle at the comment, not the actual animal sex pics cos that would just be weird.  Anyway, back to the story. So, I was clicking through things, slowly making my way to those spam comments we all know and love all so much of when I spotted a different one to usual. Some person was just scrolling through my blog, leaving practically the exact same comment on each post. Now, I’m used to taking those spam comments with a pinch of salt but this one made me stop.

At first, I laughed it off. Then I saw it appearing more and more on each of my posts from May. Now forgive me but I have a kind of rule – only insult me if you can do it intelligently. Or, if you’d like to say something rude/mean about me or my writing, come say it to me directly in an email. Yeah, okay, I’m still figuring things out on my blog and so I don’t have a ‘contact me’ page (yet) but I have all my details on my About page, and I frequently list my Twitter and Snapchat usernames so people can talk to me there. Of course, I tweeted about the above comment. After seeing it so many times, I did tear up a little.

We all have days when we write and post without fully liking what we’ve shared. There are times when we mess up and make mistakes. I may have been ‘a little bit out of track’, and I’m sorry you felt that way, but I was just back from spending 3 days in Paris and Disneyland so I was exhausted and the main aim of that post was to share our pictures. Actually both of those comments were on the Disneyland post.

So basically, in the wise words of Thumper – ‘If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.’

Day 22 – Challenges

Helloooo my lovely friends! Okay so you may be forgiven for forgetting I was participating in the 30 Days of Gratitude Blogging Challenge, especially considering I basically skipped 10 days worth of them… But have no fear! I shall post a brief one for each of these throughout the day – I’m actually going to write them the minute I finish this post.

So, as you can see, today’s theme is Challenges with the subtitle of What is your greatest challenge in life and how do you plan to overcome it? Haha well let’s just put out there that I picked a hard one to come back in on!

22.challenge

Before I could even begin to write this post, I asked myself ‘What constitutes as a challenge?’. The Cambridge Online Dictionary defines it as “(the situation of being faced with) something that needs great mental or physical effort in order to be done successfully and therefore tests a person’s ability.”  To me, personally, a challenge is something that prevents you or makes it more difficult for you to achieve the goals you set for yourself. If this is the case, then I had a lot more to think about!

I had to ask myself – what do I consider a challenge in my life? Blogging daily? We all know how well that’s been going – not. Going to university and getting a degree? We’re working on that one, patience young grasshopper. My relationship with my family? Ha, don’t get me started. Wow, there were a lot I could think of! However, I realised that none of these are really a proper challenge – more things that my self-doubt hinders or affects. That’s when it hit me. My greatest challenge, at this point in my life anyway, is my self confidence.

When conversing with the lovely ladies at GRLPOWR, and all the other amazing people involved in their chat on Sunday 18th September based on Confidence, there came a question – ‘How far would you go to gain confidence? (Surgery, buy things, etc)’. While replying truthfully, I stated that I constantly spend money on makeup and clothes to try and look better and more confident. I admitted that I considered either laser skin treatment for my acne scarring or laser hair removal, and I had also looked into laser eye surgery – all in the hope of becoming ‘prettier’ according to societies rules. I heavily rely on the things I buy and how I look to try and get people to like me – as someone once said to me, all I talk about is TV and I’m incredibly boring because of it. Well since then I’ve started talking a lot more about blogging too so I guess I’m just a nightmare to be around.

Woah, sorry, this was meant to be a post about overcoming challenges – not focusing on what the challenge is or how I feel about it! But that last paragraph was to give you a basic insight into my mind. I hate being left out of things, even if it’s nothing important. There’s always a constant worry in the back of my mind that no one likes me and they all just put up with me because I’ve attached myself to them. I know that it’s not true (hopefully) but it’s there and it’s because of my low self confidence.

It’s not something I can just get over. It’s not a quality I like about myself, ha the irony of having low self confidence because of problems caused by low self confidence, but it’s one I can work on. Back in August, I wrote about my promise to myself. I’ve recently started doing things because they make me happy and I want to do them. I’m getting more involved in extracurricular things at uni because, as Nuala said earlier, there are so many opportunities while at uni that disappear the minute we leave this place!

Planning to overcome low self confidence isn’t really effective in my opinion, simply because it takes a lot longer to change a thought or opinion than it does to change or fix a physical problem. Yes, there are ways to physically change to increase self confidence, but why should I have to change to feel better about myself? So yes, we’re working on that.

By the way, I don’t know if any of you have realised but I often refer to myself as ‘we’ – please ignore this, I am a me.

Thanks for reading!

Day 3 -My Projects or Work

Hello again everyone! It’s strange blogging on a Saturday again. How are you all today? Today’s theme for the 30 Days of Gratitude is My Projects/Work, with the subheading of What do I love about my projects/work.

3.work.png

Now, unfortunately I currently am not working, nor do I really have any projects…. So I’m going to use this chance to talk about What I Love about Blogging.

Especially with the way my university career has been going recently, I took to blogging more frequently as it gave me an escape. I love the fact it’s somewhere I can be fully myself without worrying about what anyone thinks. I’m so grateful to all my readers and followers, as without you I honestly don’t think I would’ve continued this long!

Blogging has made me happier within myself, introduced me to so many new people, and brought me closer to some amazing personalities I wouldn’t have otherwise met. I know, I know, you’re probably so fed up with hearing about Girl Power from me so I won’t go into it again. But the fact that there are so many twitter chats and chances to talk to people from anywhere in the world would’ve remained hidden from me without blogging!

I love sitting down with a cup of coffee in hand to write another post. When the words flow from my brain, through my fingers, and onto the screen, I feel so relaxed and at peace. It’s like I can actually feel my problems ebbing away while I write to you all.

What do you love about your work?

A little unscheduled post…

Well as the title might suggest, I have an unplanned post for this early morning.
As I’m sure you’ve seen, I’m part of a wonderful community of girls over at Girl Power Blog where I’ve met some of the best people I’ve ever known. We’ve become so close in the last week alone that I honestly am surprised I haven’t known them longer!
Through meeting these amazing girls, I realised just how great the blogging community can be. I mean, I knew there were some lovely people out there (1weekmary for example – hi there!) but these girls became a part of my life in a way that’s hard to explain. There’s always someone to talk to and you never feel alone because of it. They’re all so supportive and we have each other’s backs.
We had been talking about Christmas the other night, and I had a sudden brain wave – why not have a Christmas Card swap? The idea would be to contact other people involved (as many or as few as you wanted) and to send them your address in exchange for theirs. Then you would send a Christmas card and hopefully receive some yourself!
I’ve already got quite a few people interested in taking part, so if you would like to join in, either tweet me (@kvburton657), email me (katiekinnes@msn.com) with the subject line “Christmas card swap”, or comment below and we can get in touch!!
Hopefully you’ll want to be involved!

Posted in Sunday's Summary

Already?

Hello again! It really doesn’t seem all that long since I last wrote a weekly wind up. Believe it or not, it actually takes a great deal of thought to go back through the week and remember what happened! But my brain could use the exercise, especially since it’s summer. However, if someone could inform the weather that it’s summer I would be a lot happier!

Sunday was my first ever car boot sale. We’re still overrun with odds and ends from Tom’s house and so over the last year Mum, Dad and Rachel have been doing the odd car boot sale to get rid of some things. To be there early enough for a good spot, we apparently had to leave the house at 6:30am – not my idea of a Sunday morning! However, when we got there, we set up and it was good fun despite the wind and rain. Of course, it would’ve been a heck of a lot better if Dad had actually packed tea bags instead of just flasks of hot water! We made a profit of about £100 and so were happy to call it a day around 2pm, forgetting of course that we still had to pack up. Eventually we got home and unloaded the stuff from the car before collapsing in front of the TV for the rest of the evening.

Monday was slightly less hectic, with Dad and me doing the Tesco shop for Mum, and then really not doing much until taking Baron for a walk on Monday night.

Tuesday saw Rachel taking me into town to try and persuade me to buy new clothes – it certainly was interesting! I’m not really a fan of shopping unless there’s something I’m in the mood for. We then ended up walking home in the rain. I wasn’t impressed. But we made it, and started in to tidying things around the house for Mum.

Again, Wednesday was a quiet enough day. We went into town to do a few things and pick up some stuff for Rachel, had lunch at Granny’s apartment, and then headed home to enjoy the sun. Actually, it started quiet and then developed into a pretty big day! I had been added to a private chat on Twitter and was beginning to really feel comfortable with everyone there to the point we’ve started a little community and on Wednesday night after Great British Bake Off, we planned a meet up in London in December! I’m so excited to finally meet some of my favourite people from online – mainly so my mum stops thinking I make all this up about talking to people from all over the place!

Thursday started hectic with a lot of people on our chat trying to figure out what they’d missed the night before. You can be gone 10 minutes and come back to 200 or more messages if that gives you a clue… Dad and I did some shopping, then mum came home early from work so we sunbathed in the garden before finishing the night with a BBQ. I also got some really exciting news that one of my all time favourite people is coming back from California to visit us in Glasgow early next year!!! I cannot wait to see her again, it’s been far too long!!
Friday arrived and we spent the morning doing housework before meeting Mum for lunch in Marks and Spencer’s. She and I had the chicken and bacon sandwich and it was so filling! Just a shame it was quite dry, so we asked for a little sauce pot of mayonnaise it made all the difference! Afterwards, we went shopping and managed to buy Rachel’s birthday present from Mum and Dad, and I managed to pick up a new outfit for wearing on the day of my birthday! Would you like to see it? We finished the day with a drink in a local pub, and then home to organise more birthday stuff.
Saturday flew by to be honest. I made a carrot and lentil soup in the morning, then in the afternoon we went for a lovely walk in Holywood, Belfast, as a family with Granny included. We went to the rugby club for a drink afterwards (I swear we don’t spend all our time drinking) where we saw an old family friend who is unlikely to be alive this time next year. I don’t actually know what’s wrong with him but he’s been getting progressively worse over the last 6 months and just looking at him today we knew immediately he probably doesn’t have long left. The worst part is I’ll probably be in Scotland when he passed and won’t be able to come over for the funeral…

We came home, had dinner, and I curled up to watch X Factor. Did you see it? The girl at the Edinburgh auditions was fantastic!

What did you get up to this week? Will I be seeing you at the @GRLPOWRCHAT on Tuesday at 9pm? Please please please come support us! Lauren is our first host so it would be great if you could come support her!
