Sunday Summary

It’s back! Have you missed it? I can’t decide if I did or not. However, it’s a Sunday morning and here we are, ready to take a look back at the last 7 days. How have you been? Haven’t asked you in a while, how rude of me. I’m actually looking forward to sharing the last few days with you so without further adieu, here’s Sunday’s Summary!

Sunday  was a little bit of a lazy day. Well, not lazy as I had so much university work to do… But I stayed in my pyjamas all day and got to be a bit of a slob. I finished up around 7ish and an old friend from first year showed up unexpectedly while Mary was cooking dinner for the two of us, so it was quite nice to have a bit of a chat. Actually, I’ve just remembered I want to ask Mary for her recipe for that chicken… Knew this was helpful!

On Monday, I had my two lectures and my first lab session of the year! Except it wasn’t really a lab. Instead, we discussed estimating things and deriving equations and used a cool app called Kahoot to answer multiple choice questions on the board. We then had to partner up and sign up to our experiments and our literature reports for later in the year. This was the nervous part for me – I know no one in my labs and was so worried about having to find a partner and talk to someone completely new. I hovered by the sign up sheets until a good three quarters of the room had left before approaching 4 girls and a guy standing in a group – there was bound to be someone without a partner! Thankfully, the guy (Will) told me he didn’t have a partner and so now we’re together for the experiments! We’re starting with probably not the best experiment but then at least I’ve done it all before! Next week however is Matlab so please wish me luck with it. It’s a horrible coding course we have to take… Not looking forward to that.

Tuesday came and once again I made it to my lectures, and came home to an empty flat. I phoned home on Tuesday for a bit of a chat, and had a chat with my aunt in Dundee too, and so I passed the time that way. Again, I mainly spent the day writing notes up and making sure I understood what was going on. Of course, I remembered to take part in the GRLPOWR chat on Twitter and it basically ended up being a Christmas chat – at least the bits I saw! Oh, that’s another thing. I woke up with fresher’s flu on Monday and so by Tuesday honestly thought I was dying. Yes, I’m quite a bad sufferer of man-flu. A simple cold was killing me. But I attempted an early night on Tuesday as a result.

Ah Wednesday… The highlight of my week. If you have me on snapchat, then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about and I’d like to apologise for my rambling so much about going to bed instead of actually getting up and going to bed. But we’ll get to that point in a minute. I woke up on Wednesday feeling slightly better and was happy to go to class. I came back, did some work, and then made a chilli. Except there were 5 portions of chilli… I don’t know if I’ve just reduced my portion sizes or what as I purposefully only bought enough meat to make 2 portions so I’m not sure how that developed into 5? Anyway. I then got ready to go to LGBTQ+ which was having it’s official Launch Night event to raise money for the year. Drinks were £1 for a single and £2 for doubles, beers and ciders. There were also raffle tickets on sale so naturally I spent £10 on tickets and didn’t win anything. Some of my old friends from last year showed up and it was a great night, resulting in me going to Polo – the LGBTQ+ club in Glasgow City Centre. Suffice to say I spent a small fortune on drinks overall, made it home just after 3am, and was still snapchat vlogging at 4am… Sorry! No wonder I was so hungover on Thursday…

Thursday morning was painful. I woke up and spent the first hour trying not to throw up, before throwing on whatever clothes I could find and going to my lectures. Warm lecture theatres, lots of people, and being hungover was not a fantastic combination but I survived! Came home, went to have a bit of a nap but couldn’t due to noise, and so just got on with some work. Mary and I got Chinese as she had been out with the football girls and was feeling equally as rough as me. We then curled up on the sofa to watch The Apprentice. Anyone else delighted that it’s back? There were some fabulous comments and one-liners! Unfortunately I missed the chat for GRLPOWR but I think it was a good one! I then went to bed and wrote up a few blog posts while discussing the GRLPOWR Christmas plans. Yes it’s early but the fact that it’s already the 9th of October is a sign that time is going to fly!

Friday was a bit of a mixed day. I woke up thinking ‘Wow, Mary’s up early, I don’t normally see her before lectures…’. I rolled over and looked at my phone – 11:08am. My first lecture of the day had started 3 minutes earlier and there I was still in bed. There went my ‘attend every lecture’ goal! I did, however, manage to shower, dry my hair, have breakfast, and look semi decent all in the 40 minutes I had before my next lecture – not too bad in my opinion! On my way home, an old friend bumped into me and followed me home… Not that I don’t like him but just he ditched us for over a year because he had a girlfriend and now that they’ve broken up he’s come crawling back. I wouldn’t care but he expected me to just continue as if no time had passed. The afternoon was spent talking on the phone to Mum, and writing my post for Tuesday next week. Trust me when I say I was writing it from 4:30 until well after 9, and I didn’t even stop for dinner. So at 10pm I curled up in bed with doritos, netflix, and the GRLPOWR group chat to have a relaxed night.

Finally, Saturday was spent tidying my room, organising shopping lists and actually doing the shopping. I caught up on some uni work, spoke to one of my grannies, and cooked dinner for Jason, Mary and myself. Then Saturday night was once again spent blogging and chatting to friends! Haha, what happened to my social life?

So that’s you up to date! What did you get up to this week? Any fun stories to share?

Eugh. Sunday.

I love Sunday’s. The relaxation, the preparation for the week ahead, and the ever present desire to hide in bed for an eternity.

After a busy week of what felt like doing nothing, I’m exhausted. And I’ve somehow developed a cold. Monday was hectic, writing a presentation due in on Tuesday, and accompanied by a trip to the park. Tuesday then saw a day of shopping, spending money unnecessarily but it was fun. Wednesday came with a presentation in physics that I think went well, and then a fab night out with my new friends at lgbtq+. Thursday should’ve been a day of recovery except it was St. Patrick’s Day and so the drinking continued – the day ending with me attending my first ever ceilidh. Friday saw me tidying and beginning to get my life organised again before watching Freedom Writers, a fantastic film. My review can be found titled “Freedom Writers”. Saturday was super Saturday, 3 rugby matches and once again alcohol was consumed. With the cold I wasn’t drinking much and so it was fun to watch Nuala and Charlie get incredibly drunk.
I’m now currently in bed, dosed up with painkillers and cold and flu medicine, watching Criminal Minds and considering making a revision timetable. 37 days until the first exam!

Tonight’s plan is a quiet night in. Maybe a film with Mary. I’m heading home for a few weeks as of Tuesday so tomorrow will probably be spent packing along with meeting up with one of said lgbtq+ friends for coffee. Hopefully this week will be less hectic with a lot more sleep involved! Coughing stops me from sleeping…
Anyway, I’m going to go and pay attention to the tv. Remember, make the most of what’s left of your Sunday night freedom!

Blue is the Warmest Colour

Rating: 8/10

Well to start, 3 hours is long for any film. And yet, any shorter I wouldn’t have found myself as attached to the characters as I was in the end.

Adele’s life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adult. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself and ultimately finds herself through love and loss.

Not knowing much about the film, except for hearing some people compare it to a feature length pornography film, I decided to give it a go and I’m glad I did.

Thankfully I was able to find a website with subtitles as the film is in French from beginning to end, something I hadn’t realised at the start. Although, I don’t think I would’ve given it a chance had I known it would be in French. Certainly wouldn’t have started it at 11pm. However I feel the language added to the romance and raw emotion of the film.
The actresses portrayed their characters brilliantly from start to end, neither of them fell into the trap of making you aware you were watching a film. It felt as though I was standing in the shadows of Adele’s life as she progressed from high school through to her career. Not many films do that so easily.
Similarly, there aren’t many 3 hour long films that I would choose to watch again, but now Blue is the Warmest Colour can be added to that list.

But for now I shall say goodnight. It’s been a long day!

TFI Friday

Hello lovely friends! Another week has come to a close and once again I find myself on WordPress to keep you all informed on the exciting ins and outs of my life.

This week I decided to rearrange my bedroom and so I can now actually do more than one thing at a time in my room if I wanted to. We continued to learn new steps to new dances in Irish Dancing and for the first time ever I didn’t have sore legs come Wednesday morning. Wednesday’s presentation went well I feel but we’ll find out about that on Wednesday this week. This was followed by the last practical lab of the semester (thank goodness…) and I feel it wasn’t a complete disaster. However I now need to have a presentation prepared for Wednesday afternoon on some telescope I wrote a paper on months ago. Still don’t actually know anything about it. Afterwards, was a quick dash home to change top and shoes to meet Iona for dinner at the taco place at the bottom of the street before we went to GULGBTQ+’s Women’s Week event. It was a great night and resulted in Jason bringing back his current flame – surprise surprise. Although we like Daniel so this is fine. I’ll tell you about him another time.

Thursday and today have been purely essay writing and getting some work done as we approach the end of the semester – better late than never, right? Except I’ve now been distracted by the thoughts of Rachel’s upcoming 18th birthday. When I say upcoming, it’s not until September bus this is a big year for birthdays and so I want to be ahead of the game. I’ve decided to go for the stereotypical present of 18 gifts but I’m stuck on the last few ideas. At least I’ve a while to think them up, however any suggestions would be appreciated! So fat the ideas are:

  1. scrapbook of pictures and memories – I’ll write messages and add all the pictures I can find since she’s always complained her baby book was never filled in.
  2. Jar of notes for “When you…” – I got this idea from a friend’s valentine’s day present years ago. Rachel did something similar for her boyfriend but it was a Dates Jar with ideas of what to do on dates. So mine will be little notes of encouragement, memories, tips and advice.
  3. A book of some sort. Whether this is an age specific one or what I have no idea but since she’s living at home for yet another year I don’t really want to get her a survival book. Someone somewhere suggested ‘Oh, The Places You’ll Go’ so I’m going to look into that!
  4. her favourite chocolates – after eights or creme eggs
  5. hangover kit – she can now legally drink! So of course this means she’ll actually experience a hangover now.
  6. perfume
  7. CD with 18 songs on it – songs either that she loves or have some relevance to the two of us.
  8. some sort of jewellery – my typical present. Not sure what we’re going for this year.
  9. Alcohol. Another stereotypical present for an 18 year old in the UK.
  10. ‘Smuggle your booze’ hairbrush – its a hipflask disguised as a hairbrush! What’s not to love?
  11. Onesie of some sort.
  12. Places I’ve Been map
  13. tickets for either a holiday, a concert, rugby membership for the year or something. This will be the main present and so I don’t want to spend a fortune on the rest of the presents but we’ll see how it goes.

This is all I’ve got so far so I’m sure you can tell I need another 5 ideas. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Have a great weekend everyone, whatever you get up to! I’ll be sitting thinking up ideas instead of working and wishing certain people weren’t in Edinburgh.

Speak soon!

Weekend Getaway

Dundee here I come! What a week. Any routine I originally had went completely out the window, as did my work ethic.

Monday night I went to the Wine Society for the first time. We “tasted” 8 different wines from the Americas, starting with a sparkling white and finishing on a bottle of red worth £30. Now considering we paid £10 for our ticket and ended up drinking approximately 2 and a half bottles of wine each, it really wasn’t a surprise when I woke up on Tuesday morning with a hangover.

This of course meant I didn’t bother with lectures on Tuesday, and it also means I have to copy up. However, Tuesday night saw Nuala going on her first ever date!!! I’m going to assume it went well considering the next day we woke up to find said date in the kitchen in his boxers… Wednesday came and I went to all my classes, yes actually all 4 of them! I was in from 9 until 5… Not a very pleasant experience… In our physics labs at the minute we are working on something called MatLab. Please don’t ask what it is or anything because I really have no idea. It’s some sort of computerised programme that is apparently useful for physics. All I know is – computers and this programme hate me.

Wednesday night I actually went to the LGBTQ+ event! It was a Scene Tour of Glasgow, we went around all the gay bars and clubs except for one so we gave up and went to Polo instead. I think it’s safe to say that between Monday and Wednesday, my sober October plans have been destroyed. Every bar we went to have us free shots (yes, multiple each) and all double vodka and orange drinks were £3 so needless to say I then spent Thursday morning in bed with a hangover.

Yesterday was slightly more productive though. I bought 2 Christmas presents which is better than nothing! And then I met Mary and Nuala to buy Halloween decorations for the party we are throwing. It was good fun and put us all in great moods! Then was a friend’s birthday party… Needless to say I didn’t drink at all and made my excuses to crawl back to bed.

And now that you’re up to date I can tell you that the woman on the bus seat behind me is sitting with her shoes off and her bare feet are on the arm rest of my seat, it’s rather disturbing. We’ve only been travelling for about 15 minutes but I am considering going back to sleep.

My cold is almost gone! But on Wednesday night I walked into the side of a skip and have now bruised and cut my arm… No idea why it hurts this much but there’s always something, am I right?
Hope you’re all well!
