Christmas Card Swap 2o17

Hello everyone! Now I know the title of this post has probably put The Fear into a lot of you and for that I’m sorry! But it’s coming up to that time of year again. Heck, I’ve even had blogmas posts in my drafts since March! However we won’t go there yet.

Do you love receiving Christmas Cards? Does writing them fill you with the Christmas Spirit? Well, how would you like to get involved in my Christmas Card Swap?

My plans to spread some Christmas Cheer in 2017 is quite a large one, and a major part of it is this Christmas Card Swap. The plan? Simply fill in the form by clicking the link below to take part! I will then combine all the addresses to be sent to the correct groups of people and will email them to you. Of course, if you’d rather not have your address sent to others that’s perfectly fine! Let me know below and I’ll keep your address to myself. You are free then to send Christmas Cards to as many people as you wish from the list I send you. I, myself, will be sending a card to everyone taking part so you are going to receive at least one card!

This worked really well last year, with almost 30 people involved. Of course, if you took part last year and would like to be involved again this year then please do let me know by filling out the form! I won’t just assume that you’re continuing to take part.

So yes. Here’s the link –> https://form.jotformeu.com/70667472294364 , and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sign up closes on Sunday 12th November 2017, and I will be in touch with the relevant addresses by Monday 20th November 2017!

Whatcha Listening To?

EEEEK!!! We’re into the last few days and I am beginning to really stress! Today, I’m going into town in the hope of seeing something somewhere to buy for Rachel’s final part of her Christmas present. Mum’s officially off for Christmas, and I think she had a good day on Saturday celebrating her birthday. Don’t think my liver will recover on time for this weekend though!

For once, I’m actually getting to listen to Christmas music on the TV while writing this post. It’s quite rare that I can have a TV show on while blogging, so the novelty is making me feel even more festive! While today’s post is all about my Christmas Playlists, we can’t have a blogmas post without the Christmas Song Countdown – have you been enjoying it?

I’ve found as the years go on I enjoy this song more. Can’t really explain why for years I didn’t like it, but it is slowly growing on me. I’m one of those people who stereo-typically likes sad, slow songs – unless it’s Christmas. Then it’s a case of the livelier the better!

So for today’s Christmas Playlist, I have included a list to my Spotify Christmas Playlist for you to listen to if you’d like, but also here are my must-have songs for a Christmas Playlist. Only another week of it being socially acceptable to listen to them!

My Spotify Playlist – https://open.spotify.com/user/1173089764/playlist/1DcTiCc5l3suS9Meb6fFwk

  1. The Fairytale Of New York – The Pogues
  2. All I Want For Christmas Is You – Mariah Carey
  3. Do They Know It’s Christmas? – Band Aid (the original one of course)
  4. Last Christmas – Wham! (Or Wham UK for any of our American friends)
  5. Happy Christmas (War Is Over) – John & Yoko
  6. Wonderful Christmastime – Paul McCartney
  7. I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – Wizzard
  8. Merry Xmas Everybody – Slade
  9. Merry Christmas Everyone – Shakin’ Stevens
  10. Driving Home For Christmas – Chris Rea
  11. Rockin Around The Christmas Tree – Brenda Lee
  12. Step Into Christmas – Elton John
  13. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – Michael Bublé
  14. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! – Dean Martin
  15. Stop The Calvary- Jona Lewie
  16. White Christmas – Bing Crosby
  17. Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) – The Nat King Cole Trio
  18. It’s The Most Wonderful Time of Year – Andy Williams

  20. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas – Frank Sinatra
  21. A Winter’s Tale – David Essex
  22. Cold December Night – Michael Bublé
  23. Mary’s Boy Child – Boney M

Christmas Card Swap!

So I know that a lot of you will feel it’s too early for this kind of a post, but I have finally started Christmas present shopping and I’m getting really excited for the festive season!

In our flat, because of my ‘obsession’, there’s a rule that Christmas isn’t properly mentioned until at least 1st November. Apparently my excitement for the most wonderful time of the year makes people associate Christmas as a bad thing as they can’t talk about it without worrying they’re going to set me off. However, this year I have you lovely people to talk to about it so I think I’m doing better than last year! Alongside the other GRLPOWR girls, I’ve been getting more and more excited for this festive season, talking what we’ll be doing on our Twitter, blog, instagram and just our own accounts in general. Some of us are going to attempt Blogmas, and just the general mood is Halloween isn’t coming fast enough for us to hit that festive spirit!

I would love to share with you all the surprise part of our flat Christmas dinner this year, but as I am aware that Mary and Nuala now read here occassionally, I don’t want to ruin the surprise for them so if you’d like to know, tweet me! I started getting organised for it on Tuesday when I met Jordanne (thelifeofaglasgowgirl) in town for lunch. I had a great time and it was so much fun to be able to meet up with someone that I’ve been talking to for almost 2 months! Wow has it really been that long? It feels like years ago and yet it also feels like only yesterday… Does that make any sense?

I had the brainwave for it as I got the subway into town and so I’ve managed to spend at least 10 minutes a day thinking about what I’ve to buy and organise. With last year’s Santa’s Sweet Sleigh being so well received, I’ve really struggled to think of what I can do to make this year’s surprise even better. I’m also trying really hard to watch what I say here because I plan on writing a few blogmas posts on this!

As it’s now the 20th of October, and time is marching on, I wanted to bring up the topic of my Christmas Card Swap. By the way, I’m going to suggest we change the spelling of Christmas as every time I type it on a computer I type ‘CHristmas’ – it’s getting annoying! But yes, the Card Swap. Currently, I have 13 names and addresses of people who would like to be involved in this, and there’s still plenty of time for those of you who want to to get involved!

My plan to spread some Christmas cheer this year developed into the idea of a Christmas Card Swap. The general idea of it would be for anyone who wants to be involved to send me (either DM me on Twitter or email me at lifewithktkinnes@outlook.com) with an address – this can even be a PO Box address as I know how people feel about sharing their address online – and in 3 weeks (probably the 15th of November) I will DM or email back with a list of the addresses that have been sent to me. This way, it’s up to you how many Christmas cards you send and there’s no pressure to send to everyone if you don’t want to! Of course, if you would prefer me to keep your address off the list then I’m happy to do that too! Cards can be homemade or store bought, and that part is entirely up to you. Just remember to check latest posting times and dates with your local post office as you want it to arrive before the 25th December!

So yes, if this is something you’d like to be involved in, I can be contacted on Twitter or through email with the subject line Christmas Card Swap.

Hope you’re all getting in the festive spirit and listening to those classic songs that come on every year!

Day 24 – Seasons

What is your favourite season and why?

Okay so firstly I’m going to apologise because I wrote this actually on the 24th but for whatever reason it never saved as either scheduled or published so now it’s late and I have to try and remember what I put here. Actually, anyone who has me on snapchat (which of course you all should – lifewktkinnes) will have seen me starting work on this post the other day!

Picking a favourite season is hard! I have different reasons for loving all four seasons and so I’m going to list them all below. Isn’t that what the gratitude challenge was about, taking time out to be grateful for things? So without further delay, may I present ‘The Four Seasons, and Why I Love Them’.

Spring. The birds start arriving home again, there’s a freshness in the air as everything begins to come back to life, trees begin to bud again and the weather, generally, is getting warmer. Days start getting slightly longer, Easter holidays and all the chocolate that comes with that! I say the weather is generally getting warmer as those two pictures are of the same part of Lisburn Train Station, taken just one week apart in March a few years back. Everyone starts to look towards summer and plan holidays, and lectures end to make way for exams then the summer holidays so there’s always plenty of time to sleep! As long as you revise when you aren’t sleeping of course. I’m particularly looking forward to spring 2017 because Rachel and I are flying off to Lanzarote for a few nights away together!

Ah summer… the hottest time of the year! Unless you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland. Then summer is essentially just one or two days, and if the temperature goes above 17 degrees for 3 consecutive days we call it a heat wave. But this is the time of the year that we all go crazy for the sun and heat! Girls can walk around in shorts or dresses without worrying about tights, beachwear in your back garden becomes totally acceptable, you can lie around all day and no one will judge you if there’s sun in the sky! Family barbecues and road trips to the coast take up a lot of the holiday, and there’s plenty of time to relax, given that for most university students, summer is 16 weeks long! Unless of course you have resits… but even then it’s a chance to see your university friends any time! The days are long, people generally feel happier anyway, there seems to be a never ending supply of ice cream and ice lollies around, and of course the cocktails come out! Can never say no to a mojito, especially during the summer.

Ah Autumn… What isn’t there to love? I’ve actually seen quite a few posts over the last week on why people love autumn and the trend seems to be the same.

The colours begin to change to that of a warm fire. Trees everywhere become even more majestic in this stage, before shedding their leaves for us to jump in. There’s a slightly colder feel to the air, you know winter’s coming. Out come the comfy jumpers, the boots, and the jeans. Girls everywhere seem to embrace the fact that legs are now to be hidden for the next few months and the razor can have a bit of a break! Starbucks brings in the autumnal drinks – please don’t hate me but I’m not actually a fan of Starbucks – and everyone everywhere starts carrying a thermos of coffee or tea around. Our thick fluffy scarves make an appearance once again and we embrace our darker eye shadow and lipsticks. All this is before you take into account that schools and universities start back and so it’s the return of routine! An excuse to see your friends daily, what more could you ask for? Well I suppose it does help that my birthday is also in autumn! October hits and the shops fill with a mix of halloween and christmas decorations – what more do you need for a shopping spree? Halloween arrives with the excuse to welcome back your inner child and dress up with as much or as little makeup you want – whatever is scarier! Only a few days later and there’s Bonfire Night – a night that I both love and hate. While the loud bangs and whizzes of the fireworks terrifies me, I adore watching their bright lights illuminate the dark sky. The smell of the toffee apples and candyfloss, as well as writing your name in the air with sparklers… There’s nothing I love more than wrapping up in my thermals, hat, scarf and gloves, and going with friends to watch these spectacular lights, surrounded by little children with faces lit up in wonder. And as November draws to an end, we approach the most wonderful time of the year…

Winter kicks off with the best celebration of the year. Yes there are exams to contend with, but they don’t overshadow the excitement of Christmas. December 1st, the tree goes up and all the decorations come out of there boxes. Roads and houses are lit up in technicolor and children everywhere begin writing their letters to Santa. Everywhere is playing Christmas music, the air is cold, and there’s a general sense of excitement in shopping centres – hidden well behind the aggravated faces of parents who just want to get their shopping done and get home. Mulled wine and hot chocolates, Christmas Markets attract people of all ages and nationalities as we all prepare to celebrate together. Fires are lit, and families make an effort to see each other and spend time together, even if just to watch Home Alone for the umpteenth time as it’s shown on TV. Children everywhere begin to listen out for Santa and have their eyes peeled for any sign of snow. Christmas day arrives and families around the world try to put any arguments on hold until we all celebrate this time of year – some for religious reasons, others just because of the symbolism of peace, love and giving. Once Christmas ends, we all welcome in the new year with resolutions and parties! Once these are done, however, there’s the realisation that there’s another 358 days until the celebreations come around again and we have two of the longest, darkest, coldest months in our year. While February is technically the shortest month, it does seem to drag a little.

In conclusion, I would have to say that Autumn is my favourite season! Only because Christmas isn’t a season… Only 87 sleeps!

Day 18 – Food

What food makes you feel good and why?

Okay so by rights the question here should be ‘What food doesn’t make you feel good?’ – I love everything! Nothing beats a good homemade lasagne where the cheese has gone brown in places and the layers are clear, served with a warm garlic bread and salad. Or in summer, a barbecue is the go to food!

However, the one meal that will forever make me feel good is Christmas dinner. I’ve already started planning the Christmas dinner for our flat in December!

We always have a Bloody Mary Soup for a starter. I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it here but it’s basically a tomato soup with celery, Tabasco sauce and vodka, served with a freshly baked petit pain. Of course, the main course is the an important part. That succulent turkey, served with a slice of gammon, stuffing, mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, carrot and parsnip, brussel sprouts, and a good gravy! Who here doesn’t love christmas dinner?

Our desserts are always the same – a lemon meringue, a trifle, and homemade christmas pudding. No one in the flat likes christmas pudding though so I may make myself a mini one just to be awkward… Finally, we always finish, or try to finish, with a cheese board. There’s a reason we start eating so early!

There’s just something about the Christmas Dinner that makes it special. I don’t know if it’s because we’re all feeling festive, or if it’s because the family are together and in a good mood, or what. But it is definitely my favourite food.

A little unscheduled post…

Well as the title might suggest, I have an unplanned post for this early morning.
As I’m sure you’ve seen, I’m part of a wonderful community of girls over at Girl Power Blog where I’ve met some of the best people I’ve ever known. We’ve become so close in the last week alone that I honestly am surprised I haven’t known them longer!
Through meeting these amazing girls, I realised just how great the blogging community can be. I mean, I knew there were some lovely people out there (1weekmary for example – hi there!) but these girls became a part of my life in a way that’s hard to explain. There’s always someone to talk to and you never feel alone because of it. They’re all so supportive and we have each other’s backs.
We had been talking about Christmas the other night, and I had a sudden brain wave – why not have a Christmas Card swap? The idea would be to contact other people involved (as many or as few as you wanted) and to send them your address in exchange for theirs. Then you would send a Christmas card and hopefully receive some yourself!
I’ve already got quite a few people interested in taking part, so if you would like to join in, either tweet me (@kvburton657), email me (katiekinnes@msn.com) with the subject line “Christmas card swap”, or comment below and we can get in touch!!
Hopefully you’ll want to be involved!
