So I’m currently sitting here eating Chilli Heatwave Doritos and watching Orange is the New Black which I’ve only recently started. I’m on episode 8 and really finding it intriguing. Have you seen Orange is the New Black? If not, keep reading to hear my thoughts!

For those of you who aren’t sure what it’s about, to be honest I wasn’t when I started. The story follows the main character (who’s name I still haven’t caught if anyone wants to fill me in? UPDATE: Her name is Piper. Finally took a few minutes to look it up for myself!) who’s been put in prison, and the storyline follows her life on the inside. Hence the Orange is the new Black – everyone’s dressed fully in orange. Most of Piper’s fellow inmates are lesbians or bi which makes it quite funny in parts! In all honesty, it isn’t my all time favourite show that I can’t stand missing but it’s good enough to keep me wanting more. Even my dog watches it with me! And if we’re not watching Netflix, we’re watching the shows and films included on Amazon Prime Video. Definitely worth taking the time to look into it!

Since it’s summer and my first year of not having a clue about what’ll hit me in September, I’ve decided to try and watch a few new series over the next couple of months. My family and I recently started watching 24 from the start. Now that is a show I hate not getting to watch! But I’ll talk more about 24 in a few minutes. I mean, this post is meant to be about Orange is the New Black.

Orange Is The New Black: A Summary

Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is a new inmate in Litchfield Penitentiary, a women’s federal prison in upstate New York. She leaves behind her white bread family and fiancé Larry. A decade earlier unbeknownst to her family and friends, she was recruited by her secret girlfriend Alex Vause (Laura Prepon) to transport drug money… one time. For that, she gets 15 months. She is an entitled fish out of water.

This American comedy-drama streaming television series created by Jenji Kohan for Netflix. The series is based on Piper Kerman‘s memoir, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison published in 2010, about her experiences at FCI Danbury, a minimum-security federal prison.  In prison, Chapman is reunited with Vause (who named Chapman in her trial, resulting in Chapman’s arrest), and they re-examine their relationship. Simultaneously, Chapman, along with the other inmates, attempt to grapple with prison’s numerous, inherent struggles. Episodes often feature flashbacks of significant events from various inmates’ and prison guards’ pasts. These flashbacks typically depict how an inmate came to be in prison or develop a character’s backstory.

Orange Is The New Black: My Thoughts

I quite enjoyed getting to meet all the different characters, and eight episodes into the show I’m finally following who’s who. It shouldn’t be difficult, but I think I missed the first episode somehow so didn’t see a lot of the introductions to the characters. But it’s funny, light, and I’m not going to lie – I rarely watch shows with an LGBTQ+ cast and this is making me wonder why! It’s been good to see a range of characters being portrayed by people from different backgrounds. I particularly loved Alex, and confirmed through watching Orange is the New Black that I really don’t have a specific type. But Piper annoys me. Much the way most main characters annoy me, actually. Meredith Grey, Frodo Baggins, the main character in the Private book series I read years ago… And don’t even get me started on Bella Swan or Katniss Everdeen! Maybe it’s just female leads that annoy me… but that doesn’t explain Frodo. Sorry, I got side tracked there! If you can tolerate Piper, then I definitely recommend you give Orange is the New Black a chance.

A Bonus: My Thoughts on 24

It’s exciting, tense and there’s a new twist in every episode. Jack Bower, whilst not being my type, is a fantastic character and Kiefer Sutherland is brilliant at acting him. Personally I don’t like his wife in the series, she seems to be too annoying for me to warm to. Really, if you enjoy thrillers and action packed shows, this is a must see. I didn’t think I would enjoy it, having watched Spooks for years on BBC 1 (now that I certainly couldn’t and can’t live without) I thought 24 would be too American and not my style of viewing. However, they manage to perfectly balance the different parts of the storyline without confusing anyone. 24 is a spy/crime thriller series set in America. The idea is each episode, one hour long in length represents one hour of a 24 hour day. Each season has 24 episodes, giving you a 24 hour day. The first season involves the President of the United States, and I can’t remember if they’re part of the CIA or FBI. But if you enjoy Homeland or Designated Survivor then you should definitely give 24 a go. I’ll probably write a post about it at a later stage!

More Rambles…

I’m about to go on holiday for a while and dreading not seeing my favourite programmes but the sun and sand of Ibiza is calling to me. Unfortunately so are the galaxy bars in my fridge. Maybe in the future they’ll find a pill that lets us eat whatever we want without getting fat? Fingers crossed! Then again, I could just actually exercise. Then I wouldn’t feel as guilty. Maybe I can think ahead to the laps of the pool I can maybe do when we’re in Ibiza? I don’t know. Either way, I’m not going to feel guilty right now. Food is essential, not a reward. Although I don’t think we can count Chocolate in that “essential food” category. But it should count. That’s my opinion anyway. I used to know someone who was allergic to chocolate. Can you imagine?? That would be horrible… Anyway, I digress.

But one of the best parts about both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video is that you can download your shows to watch on holiday, even if you’ve not got any internet. If you haven’t seen Orange is the New Black, I definitely recommend having a look at it. On the other hand, if you’re a big fan, there’s a big wide world of merchandise for fans! I particularly love the homemade fan merchandise on Etsy. Mainly because you’re also supporting a small independent seller!

In the mean time, I’m away to have some of that delicious chocolate we were talking about earlier, and think about what I need to pack for our holiday. I simply cannot wait to get the sun on my skin. Even if I do manage to burn simply looking at the sun from inside the house! Which reminds me… I need to find some after sun and my prescription sunglasses for this holiday. Otherwise I’ll be wearing contact lenses constantly with regular sunglasses! Not the worst thing in the world, but not ideal with the cost of contact lenses!
