Heading off on a city break can be super exciting. And depending on the duration of your trip, there’s often multiple things to consider packing. Packing lists help me get ready for any holiday away, and a city break is no different. So here’s my list of the must-pack items for your city break this year!

Actually, the main reason this post came to mind is that my the time it gets published (for the first time) I’ll be on my way to the airport for a city break in London. Yes, that’s right, the Queen + Adam Lambert concert is finally here! But as much as I love going away, the stress of packing for a city break often overtakes the excitement of the break.

Why A City Break Packing List?

As I was just saying, packing for your city break can be stressful. Especially with airport security and luggage restrictions, never mind if you’re travelling to the specified city for the first time and don’t know where you are. I have always used packing lists. Astrologists will tell you it’s because I’ve a Virgo Sun. Others would say it’s because I like to have control. And with so many unknowns when it comes to travel, my packing list is something that remains constant. Plus, speaking as someone who has frequently travelled without important items when she hasn’t used a packing list, you’d be surprised at what you don’t think of.

Okay, but why specify a list for a city break?

Well, as I was saying, it’s so easy to travel without important things. And a City Break is no exception. When I was at university in Glasgow, I frequently took a “city break” to either Dundee, Belfast, or elsewhere on adventures (like London or Leeds). Even since I left university, city breaks to Prague, London, Edinburgh and other cities have become more frequent as I use a city break to get out of Northern Ireland for a day or two. Heck, I even use my City Break Packing List when I’m taking a trip to Fermanagh to visit my cousin!

I suppose then technically it isn’t a City Break packing list… more a Long Weekend Packing List. But whichever you choose to refer to your break away as, today’s packing list comprises the top things you should always be sure to pack. So how frequently is it the night before your holiday, and you’re standing in front of an empty suitcase without a clue of what to put in it. How often have you gone on holiday and then noticed that you’ve forgotten something important that isn’t too easily sourced? Or come back from your city break or summer holiday and realised that you packed so much unnecessary stuff that you could’ve saved some of your weight allowance? To make sure that this doesn’t happen on your next city break, I’ve put together the below packing list for your next city break.

My Ultimate City Break Packing List

While some city breaks will see you travel with hold luggage, often we try to travel for a short weekend away with just hand luggage. More and more airlines are beginning to restrict even your hand luggage allowance onboard their flights in an effort to raise more money for themselves and reduce the amount of hand luggage in the overhead compartments. For that reason, I now frequently find myself just adding a suitcase to the hold to save unnecessary stress regarding liquids and security. So please take that into consideration when using my city breaks packing list. Please note, some items on this list will be optional for you. I’ve marked these with a * (asterisk) to give you the reminder it’s there if you need it.

Please remember, packing lists are very individual. I based this one based on myself (26 years old, female) and my experiences traveling both as a student and as an adult exploring the world or visiting family and friends. This means for you: just delete the items you don’t use and add the things you can’t travel without! What are some items you simply cannot travel without? Have I missed a really obvious item from my packing list? Let me know in the comments below!
