It’s Thursday, it’s the 17th December, and today we’re celebrating Mum’s Birthday! But while I get ready to spend the day off work preparing for her birthday celebrations tonight, let’s dive right in to my dream Christmas home.
You know the quote “a dog’s for life, not just for Christmas”? Someone needs to remind me of that when it comes to a house! With no chance of being in my own place any time soon, I seem to spend hours upon hours looking at houses online. For that reason, I know exactly what I would be looking for in my dream house at Christmas!
First of all, I want to acknowledge that I did originally write a post like this in my first ever year of Blogmas back in 2016. So if you’ve been around long enough to remember my post A Girl Can Dream then you’ll know – my house would be epic. Firstly, if I could pick my dream dream house, it would have to be the McAllister’s from Home Alone. That house would be incredible to decorate each year!
My Dream Home at Christmas
But since I know I probably could never live there, I decided to look a little closer to home. Being reasonable, and considering I’m currently a single person in my twenties with friends and family I would be inviting to stay, I ended up opting for the below house as my dream Christmas home. I spent ages trying to find the perfect house on PropertyPal, but in the end borrowed a floor plan from a development near where some of my family live. On the other hand, I certainly fell in love with some places when looking online!
Now that we’ve had a look at the floor plan, let’s put a front on the house, shall we? First up, I would love the front of the house to look a bit like this below.
Of course, I would have a marvelous garden covered in a blanket of snow. With lights leading up the driveway in a tasteful way. While I love all things Christmas and love decorating, I can’t stand all those multiple lights and displays going on. For that reason, I would probably end up with a simply decorated porch with a small theme. But let’s get looking inside, shall we?
Inside My Dream Christmas Home
The Ground Floor
So looking at the floor plan, we have quite a few rooms to play with, and that turret is going to be perfect in the lounge for decorating! But rather than starting in there, let’s have a look at as you come in the front door. We have cupboards and a bathroom that will be decorated to make my Christmas home welcoming to all! I’d probably have at least one of the 3 cupboards set aside as a guest one. But I would definitely have a shoe rack and a selection of festive slippers. Or Christmas cosies for anyone coming in from the snow!
In the hallway…
Would be the first Christmas tree my guests would encounter. A traditionally decorated one, placed in the centre of the hall. The hall is also where I would be displaying some Christmas candles, any cards I had received, and some ornaments.
The lounge in my Christmas home…
This is where I would pull out all the stops. It’s where the majority of people gather on Christmas Day, and needs decorated appropriately. There would of course be a fireplace decorated, a tree in the turret, and plenty of Christmas smalls to make the house more homey. Something like the below maybe…
Leading off the lounge is the sunroom…
And this is where I would probably just have a small tree. It would have some overflow seats for when the lounge becomes too crowded, but really would be somewhere to sit and look out at the stars on a snowy night.
Christmas Downstairs Bedroom
This would be for the elderly guests to stay in predominantly, so would just have some basic Christmas decorations to allow it to look part of the rest of the house. Maybe just a garland over the kingsize bed? I’d probably just leave the en-suite as is – no one wants too much Christmas while they’re in the shower. Although there would be festive scented shampoo, conditioner and any other toiletries I can think of!
The kitchen and dining areas of my Christmas home
Now, as this is where the majority of festive spirit seems to fly out the window as the stress increases and the food takes over, I would need this tastefully decorated. My dining room in my dream Christmas home would have a simple gold table cloth with red and gold place settings and decorations. I’d also have a festive wax melt tucked away in a corner making the room smell all Christmassy without being too noticeable.
The kitchen would have small decorations around my kitchen island, and baubles hanging from the handles, with festive dish cloths and crockery dotted around the place. I would love for Christmas to take over, but there’s too much needing done in the kitchen for it to become too cluttered with decorations!
Upstairs in my dream Christmas home
Each bedroom would have a unique theme for decorating – one a winter wonderland in ice blues and silvers, another red and gold, you get my drift. There would be a small tree in each room, and a Christmas stocking hanging on the doors for each of my guests. I’d dot scented candles around the place, a few Christmas ornaments, and anything festive I can find. Then I’d be leaving Christmas jumpers and fleeces, slippers, and pyjamas in the rooms for each of them too. Again, bathrooms will have Christmas toiletries and towels in them, and another small tree in the landing.
Overall, it would be a Christmas wonderland – somewhere you could only dream of spending Christmas Eve. With the fires lit, carols playing on the record players, and Christmas games being played in every room. Isn’t it the Christmas home of your dreams?
