Good morning and happy Thursday one and all! Is it just me or did the first week of September fly by? I know it’s not over yet, but it may as well be for all the things we got done! It’s been a while since I took time out to sit and read, especially now with trying to put some more time into blogging, so I thought a little post about what I’m reading this month may help to keep me on track and motivated.
So it’s not like we’ve fully finished the first week of September, but it has been busy enough. Sunday was spent the usual way – house cleaned, general preparation for the week ahead, and Granny was over for Sunday lunch. Monday was into work, and we are finally back to all of us being in! Only for a few days mind you, but still it was good to have everyone back. It was a super busy day, just getting everyone caught up on everything, and figuring out what orders we needed to get moving. Doesn’t sound it, but I was glad to come home and collapse in front of the tv. Tuesday was more of the same, but my post about the kitchen went live, so that meant being up that little bit earlier to make sure everything was ready for it to be posted – especially with it only being finished on Monday night!. I know it sounds daft, but that half hour less of sleep can actually really offset the rest of your day! What really didn’t help was that choir was changed from Wednesday to Tuesday this week, so now I’m a day ahead of myself. Why do they do this to me? Wednesday was back into work again, then home for a slightly more relaxed night, even if I did spend the entire day thinking it was Thursday. And now it finally is Thursday! So I have WW tonight, and tomorrow is my half day in work. I can’t wait to finish early and get my hair done. Then, I’ve been told we’re doing something on Saturday for my birthday (Monday), so who knows what the weekend will bring – apart from an early start on Saturday morning!
And now I’ve managed to ramble that much I forgot what I was actually looking to write about today! Back to my books.
My to be read pile has been growing exponentially recently, and while I can easily start a book, staying focused on it right to the end has been difficult the last few months. And now that I’m having to read for my Open University course this month, I want to make a point of getting more of my own books read.
The first book I am still trying to read and finish is Catch 22. I watched the recent series on Channel 4, and while it was bizarre, I loved it. Needless to say, the book is as whacky as the series, or is it the series is as whacky as the book? But it took a little while to get into the different style of writing. Add in the fact that it’s my granny’s book so it’s smaller print, older pages, a very cracked spine, and there are literally chunks of pages missing, and well is it a surprise I’m taking my time with it? Set in the closing months of World War II in an American bomber squadron off the coast of Italy, Catch-22 is the story of a bombardier named Yossarian who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he has never even met keep trying to kill him. Joseph Heller’s bestselling novel is a hilarious and tragic satire on military madness, and the tale of one man’s efforts to survive it.
The next book I hope to finish reading this month, not least because I started it back in May, is Before I Die. I only have about 50 pages left, but the idea of lifting the book and finishing it just doesn’t appeal. It’s not that I’m not enjoying the book, I promise I am, but there always seems something better to do than sit with the book. What is wrong with me?? Tessa has just a few months to live. Fighting back against hospital visits, endless tests, drugs with excruciating side-effects, Tessa compiles a list. It’s her To Do Before I Die list. And number one is sex. Released from the constraints of ‘normal’ life, Tessa tastes new experiences to make her feel alive while her failing body struggles to keep up.
Tessa’s feelings, her relationships with her father and brother, her estranged mother, her best friend, her new boyfriend, all are painfully crystallized in the precious weeks before Tessa’s time finally runs out.
The final book I want to finish before the end of the month is A Game of Thrones which I have been listening to on Audible since before we went to Cyprus back in May. I have an awful habit of starting to listen to an audiobook and then falling asleep, so I still have about 4 hours to go. I can and will finish this book! I might have to do what my manager does and start listening to the audiobook in the car when driving to and from work, never mind the road trips planned for later in the month – if there’s no one else in the car with me that is!
